Luke Farrell — TE, SF — 2026
Verdict
AVOID (high confidence), judged against a mock-undrafted ADP (Sleeper rank tail, 2026-07-08; no FFC PPR appearance in data/adp/adp_ffc_2026-07-07.csv). Farrell is a paid-to-block Y whose own team's beat coverage spent the offseason calling his 3-yr/$15.7M contract a mistake (SI 49ers "contract that will age poorly"; Niner Noise "$8 million tight end mistake" — searched 2026-07-08). The 2025 usage says why: 17 games, 35% snap share, 25.1% pass-play participation, 14 targets (2.6% TS), 36 pass-*blocking* snaps with 2 sacks allowed — he blocked on more than a fifth of his pass snaps and was out-snapped by undrafted Jake Tonges by season's end (participation join computed 2026-07-08; SI, 2026). te.md's RP gate (<55%) fails by 30 points, and the Blocking Y archetype ruling (§8: "no price makes him draftable") applies. The critical nuance for this roster: SF's TE contingency is already resolved against him — when Kittle missed 2025 time it was Tonges who inherited the routes (46 targets, 5 TD; re-signed 2-yr — team profile, 2026-07-07). Farrell has neither standalone nor contingent value. The market prices him at zero and is right.
Bull case
- Job security is decent: ~$1.7M guaranteed for 2026 on a blocking-specialist deal, in the league's heaviest 21-personnel offense — he'll be on the field ~1/3 of snaps all season.
- He scored twice in 2025 on 14 targets — Shanahan's play-action leak-outs occasionally gift a wide-open blocking TE, so scattered DFS-punt TD weeks exist.
- If both Kittle *and* Tonges missed time, Farrell would be the last TE standing in a scheme that must play tight ends — the double-injury week would produce startable snaps by default.
Bear case
- The profile is a te.md checklist of disqualifiers: 25% RP, 0.084 TPRR, 2.6% TS, 9%+ pass-block rate — a Blocking Y on both usage and contract, the archetype the methodology says is undraftable at any price.
- The contingency lane is closed: 2025 already proved Kittle absences route through Tonges (46 targets) while Farrell stayed at 14 — there is no injury scenario short of a double-TE wipeout that gives him routes.
- His own market signal is negative: local coverage spent the spring debating whether the team regrets his contract — a player being defended as "at least he blocks" has no fantasy tailwind.
Why the market is wrong: it isn't — undrafted is correct. AVOID (not HOLD) because the residual temptation — "SF TE2, Kittle is 33 and injury-prone" — is factually wrong on the depth chart: the receiving TE2 is Tonges. Do not roster.
Projection & comps
Half-PPR, 6pt pass TD (league-settings.md, confirmed 2026-07-08), bottom-up from role:
| Floor (p20) | Median (p50) | Ceiling (p80) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role | blocking share trimmed further; healthy scratch weeks | 2025 redux: TE2/3 blocking Y in league-high 21/12 sets | Kittle misses time *and* Tonges also out; short-area leak-outs |
| Volume | ~6 tgt, 4-35-0 | ~14 tgt, 11-90-1 | ~26 tgt, 20-170-2 |
| Half-PPR pts | ~5 | ~18 | ~42 |
- 2025 actual: 14 tgt, 11-85-2, 29.5 PPR = 24.0 half-PPR in 17 games (~1.4 PPG) — and that was 2-TD-flattered; xTD on 14 short targets ≈ 0.7 (receiving.csv 2025). 2024 (JAX): 17 tgt, 12-67-0, 12.7 half-PPR.
- Games risk: low — 17/17 games in 2025, durable blocker; his $1.7M 2026 guarantee makes a cut unlikely though not impossible (SI contract coverage, 2026).
- Comp seasons (blocking-Y TE3s, 15–40 half-PPR band; characterization): Farrell's own 2024–25, Charlie Woerner 2023 (SF) and 2024 (ATL), Ross Dwelley 2022 — the exact roster archetype SF has always employed behind Kittle.
Usage profile (te.md §2 table — 2025 SF; 2024 JAX in parens)
| Metric | Value | Band | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route participation (proxy) | 25.1% of SF pass plays (167/666); (2024 JAX: ~38% snap share, RP proxy not computed) | Concern — gate fails | Eval ends here per te.md §2 (participation join, 2026-07-08) |
| TPRR (proxy) | 0.084 (14/167) | Concern (<0.14) | Runs routes as a decoy/outlet only |
| YPRR (proxy) | 0.51 (85/167) | Concern (<1.0) | — |
| Target share | 2.55% (2024: 3.3%) | Concern | Two teams, same verdict on his hands |
| RZ / end-zone targets | UNVERIFIED; 2 TD on 14 targets = spike, not role | Concern | — |
| Pass-block rate | 36 pass-block snaps (≈9%+ of his ~400 off. snaps; 2 sacks allowed — PFF via SI, 2026) | Concern (>8% = protector) | The staff sees a protector — te.md §3 direct negative |
| Detached rate | UNVERIFIED — deployed inline/wing in SF's league-high 21-personnel sets | Concern | — |
| xFP | usage-implied ≈ 1–1.5 half-PPR PPG | Concern | — |
Age/pedigree: 28 (born 1997-10-14), NFL year 6, 2021 R5 (Ohio State). Capital decayed; five NFL seasons of blocking usage are the record (Sleeper cache; receiving.csv 2021–25 pattern).
Context (from data/team-profiles/SF.md, updated 2026-07-07)
- Shanahan's offense is TE/FB-rich (league-high ~36% 21 personnel) — which is exactly why Farrell was signed *to block* in it. The route/target funnel runs CMC (23.5% TS) → Evans → Kittle → Pearsall/Kirk; TE2 receiving work went to Tonges (46 tgt + 5 TD as the 2025 Kittle fill-in, re-signed 2-yr 2026-03-12).
- Kittle (age 33) missed 6 games in 2025 — the contingency reps that created Tonges' season are the same reps that bypassed Farrell *while he was on the roster*. The depth chart has already run this experiment.
- SF beat coverage openly frames the contract as sunk cost ("no easy way out… buyer's remorse" — Niner Noise/SI, 2026); his 2026 job is run-game blocking for a 10.5-win-total offense. Note: one search result referenced Kittle and an Achilles; SF's own team profile (verified 2026-07-07) records Kittle's 2025 as an 11-game injury season with no Achilles tear reported — treat the Achilles mention as UNVERIFIED noise, not signal.
Tripwires (re-run if any fire)
- Tonges traded/injured in camp — Farrell becomes the nominal contingency; re-check (verdict likely still AVOID on his TPRR).
- Camp reports of Farrell running detached routes or featuring in red-zone packages (would contradict the entire 2025 usage record).
- Farrell cut/traded despite the guarantee — remove/re-run.
- Kittle misses extended time AND Farrell (not Tonges) absorbs the routes in the first game — usage evidence beats this eval's assumption.
